Pull ups are the best exercise for your lats.

The big problem is a lot of people carry too much body weight to even do a single pull up.

The first step to doing your first pull up may be losing some weight, if that is the case, don't give up on your pull up goals.

You can perform negative pull ups. This involves hanging on the bar with your chin over it and lowering yourself down as slow as you can.

Perform a few repetitions to start your workout before you do some more lighter lat exercises.

Some people call pull-ups with your hands facing you "chin-ups" which is really reverse grip pull ups.

If you are a guy, reverse grip pull ups are probably easier because of your biceps strength.

Another tip to strengthen your lats for doing pullups is to use wrist straps. If your wrists are strapped in you will be more likely to use your lats.

Yet another tip is to kip. Kipping is when you flex your hip and raise your knees to create momentum to swing yourself up.

In for kipping to be beneficial you must lower yourself under control so you get a good muscular contraction.

You're never too old to do a pull-up.

You may be too heavy though. That is what cardio and a good diet is for.
