Si Tu Vois Ma Mere - Jim Buchmann 2008

In the fall of 2008 during a jazz festival in Chandler Arizona saxellist Jim Buchmann did a wonderful version of Sidney Bechets Si tu vois ma mere. In the seventies Jim was a member of the Climax Jazz Band.
I was their trumpeter then and Jim had played that tune once in a while before. Jimmy moved back to the States and worked for more than 20 years as a musician with the Disney Organisation. In 2002 Jim moved to the Okanagan and joined my band, Okanagan Swing, for a few years. He then moved back to his hometown Portland, Ore. Again he plays with the Climax Jazz Band on their international festivals. I havent heard Jim play this tune with such feeling, with so much interwoven ideas of his own without copying Bechet. A unique tune to begin with, with Jimmys approach this has become a very special performance.
I should also compliment Dave Kosmyna, the bands cornetist, who plays piano in this tune which is not something he does on a regular basis.
Original members are Chris Daniels on bass and Jack Vincken on banjo. During this festval they were blessed to have Hal Smith, who is one of the very best drummers in this style in the USA, on drums as a guest.

  • I think you'll find that Bechet played it in C at least on some occasions. The written score I have for it is in C

  • @lesterwyoung I think Bechet played it in Bb as his disciples Bob Wilber, Olivier Franc (who plays his original Buescher 1923), Alain Meaume etc do. Perhaps the player of the Youtube version was a bit too fast.

  • Jim does this in C, as does Max Greger. Bechet's recording (on YouTube) is played in B natural, which is highly unlikely as the original key. The question is: which was Bechet's original key: Bb or C?

  • Wow! Beautiful, beautiful version of this wonderful song! So different but right up there with the Wilbur version. I've been tracing it all evening on my soprano...Thanks for this great posting Bob.

  • Jim, now that was lovely.

  • Wonderful !! This is the nicest version of the old Bechet classic that I have heard. It is played with great intensity and feeling. I feel very privileged and honoured to have known and played with this fine musician for a couple of years when he was with Okanagan Swing, Well done Jimmy !!!
