Unfriendly neighbor hid explosives in Weymouth

Peter Cantelli is was known as the kind of person who would watches his handicapped parking space out of his apartment window and calls police the instant another driver pulls a car into it.
The only interaction his neighbors at Avalon Ledges in Weymouth apartment complex where Cantelli lives, said they had with him was when he would complain or gripe to them.
"He was just not a nice man, so people just kind of stood away from him and let him do his own thing," said a neighbor who declined to be identified.
Cantelli may have been considered unapproachable, but neighbors said no one in the quiet apartment community off Washington Street (Route 53) just southeast of the intersection of Main Street (Route 18) suspected he Cantelli was hoarding explosives and ammunition.
Cantelli, 48, had an explosive device and several military-grade rifles and other guns weapons in his apartment when officers police entered it Monday evening, police said. Cantelli had raised the suspicion of a utility company after he left his gas on and filled his apartment with it Sunday and again on Monday.
Police said he was wielding a loaded semiautomatic handgun when they knocked on his door Monday. Police negotiated with him to allow them to enter, and found backpacks containing containing gunpowder and roofing nails. Also found, was $23,000 in cash.
The backpacks looked ready to be detonated, and residents were evacuated for several hours as a precaution Monday night, Weymouth Police Chief James Thomas said.
