Root Doctor (www.rootdoctorband.com) performs the classic Memphis soul staple "Green Onions", featuring Jim Alfredson on the Hammond organ.

Jim Alfredson is also the organist for the jazz trio organissimo (www.organissimo.org) and plays the Hammond XK Traditional System with a Hammond XK3 and a Leslie 3300. The front of the video is an interview with Jim about his early years and influences.

Root Doctor is Freddie Cunningham on lead vocals, James Williams on bass and backing vocals, Jim Alfredson on keys and backing vocals, Greg Nagy on guitar and backing vocals, and Bobby Gardner
on drums. More information about Root Doctor and more music can be found at the website (www.rootdoctorband.com). Root Doctor's music can be found at iTunes and Amazon among others.

Root Doctor's latest CD is "Live At The Cadillac Club" which features a cover of another Booker T classic, "Hip Hug Her" (a video is also here on YouTube). "Live At The Cadillac Club" hit number 8 on the Living Blues charts for October 2008 and won the WYCE Jammie Award for Best Blues Album. Root Doctor's previous CD, "Change Our Ways", got the band nominated for a Blues Music Award and also won a WYCE Jammie Award for Best Blues Album.

  • Agree denver. This is the best version of green onions i have heard. Is this on any recording?

  • @tommeide Thank you! No, it's not on any CDs or DVDs, unfortunately. I might have to change that. :)

  • Is the reverb built in to the keyboard...or is it an outboard effect?

    Rob

  • @Keyboardman88 The reverb is within the XK3. You can switch it on or off with the push of a button.

  • I have watched this video at least a hundred times...your take on this is one of the best organ solos I've ever heard...unreal...

  • @tguttormson Thank you!

  • This video is hot!!!

  • HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • An absolutely smokin' version!

  • @Ente504 Can't wait to get home from work and give that a try:)

  • Very good but entire performance lacks soul and blues. The band is very good at duplicating the sound but the feel of the performance doesn't inspire Memphis blues.

  • Take your self a beer, sit down, open this video, close your eys and lisen.

    This will make your day.

    Trust me....

  • @b3groover that's a shame... it sounds really great! can't wait for a recording, so I can listen without using youtube ;)

  • Who did the very first version of this? I use to hear something like it on a radio many year's ago little before age fifteen and I'm thirty now so any help? heard this on xmen first class so I came here searching use to like it on the radio

  • gta san andreas soundtrack - master sounds FM

  • I got asked to play Green Onions at a drop in gig last night. Using my new SK1, I tried and failed to get it down... looking today and found this..thank you., now I know... this was brilliant and it brought back the mojo of the basic theme with added magic.
