Morrinsville Sports won the premier Waikato club rugby championship on Saturday in a fitting tribute to coach Darrin Stevenson, who died of a heart attack two weeks before the final.
A crowd of thousands watched Morrinsville beat Fraser-Tech 26-18 in the final of the Waikato Breweries Shield at Waikato Stadium.
"It was sad that he wasn't there to see it, but we all felt him there around us," Mr Stevenson's widow, Lesley Ormsby, said.
Mr Stevenson, 43, suffered a heart attack on July 12, less than 24 hours after guiding Morrinsville to an upset victory over his old club side Fraser-Tech to make the semifinals. Ms Ormsby said watching Saturday's match without Mr Stevenson being there was "very emotional".
"But obviously we were very happy for Darrin and the team. They did it and came through for everyone," she said.
The family joined about 500 people in celebrations back at the team's clubrooms in Morrinsville on Saturday night.
"If two weeks ago hadn't killed him, then Saturday night sure would have," Ms Ormsby said. "He would have been there right to the end."
Ms Ormsby said she was extremely proud of Mr Stevenson's achievements with the team.
"He worked really well with the boys and had a gift for making people believe in themselves.
"He united the team and that showed on Saturday night."
Morrinsville Sports team manager Warwick Steffert said the win was "just unbelievable".
"They were determined to win."
Six bus loads of fans travelled to Hamilton to support the side. "I've never seen a crowd like it," Mr Steffert said.
The celebrations ran well into Sunday morning and kicked off again yesterday afternoon.
"It was a huge night," Mr Steffert said. "We didn't go home until after the All Blacks (v South Africa) game finished, which was very early Sunday morning.
"We went back to the clubrooms again yesterday and didn't leave until midnight. I'm absolutely shattered."
Mr Steffert said some of the team were still celebrating.
Matamata-Piako Mayor Hugh Vercoe said the win was "fantastic".
He was trying to organise a fitting way to celebrate the win in Morrinsville this Friday.
"I really think the town is so proud of them. So it will be a celebration on behalf of the town."
