These techniques are part of the PRT (Pivotal Response Treatment). Very successful in reducing the symptoms of autism, sometimes to the point where no autistic symptoms are present in the former autistic person.

why is this child not already receiving services to help him learn to communicate using words?

Wow instead of attacking the Mom, how about you people consider that she's possibly on the autism spectrum herself. She also looks to be suffering from depression. But I believe she is undiagnosed mild autism or aspie. Makes me sad that no one on the show considered it.

Has he been tested for the 7q11.23 duplication syndrome? The syndrome mimics autism and is often mis-diagnosed

@GoddessFourWinds "two" instead of cookies because you always gave him two, that is so cute!

My son is bipolar. When he was little, he was far ahead on the learning curve but was slow to speak. My mom had me wait until he would say words before giving him something. It was so very hard, but it did work. Even though he said "two" instead of "cookies," I'd give them to him. Because I always offered him two. :) It was progress. He's an adult now, and I'm still part of his adjusting to adult life. All the hard work is worth it, in the end.
