Skinner Steam Engine Electricity Generator at the Allegany County Fairgrounds has been in service until 1991 at the Babcock Ladder Co. in Bath, NY. Most of the noise is from a model steam tractor.

  • how many amps can this baby pump out?

  • They are working on it, not known at this time.

  • How many pounds per hour would it take to generate electricity? What is the PSI demand needed?

  • After the electric panel is installed it will be trial and error to figure out how many PSI will produce how many watts of electricity. The capacity of the generator is unkown at this time, the question you ask is challenging. Maybe there is an old timer at the Babcock Ladder Company who knows. Steam turbines are much more efficent used by power plants. Wind energy better yet. Thanks for the comment.

  • Then let me ask this. This engine is running just for exibition. How many RPMs then when it is at constant work?

  • Yes the engine is running only at a fraction of speed just to demonstrate the action. Running at full speed would be hard to see the motion. To output 110 volts the generator will determine the RPM. The larger the diameter of the generator, the slower it has to run. The governor will be set to keep it at 110 volts. The RPM is unknown at this time.

  • The pulley at the end also drove the machinery in the plant to make ladders until 1991. The pulleys were sized to run the machinery at optimim speeds so this sucker did some work in it's previous life. Did you read the "more" in blue.

  • Thats brilliant! Probably the neatest electric plant I've ever seen.

  • Sweet. I love it. She is a beauty. Take good care of her for sure. I would love to help with that project.

  • It would be interesting to hook up something like this with a freon or an ammonia refrigeration cycle instead of steam for pressure... solar providing the heat

  • that is a beautiful piece of iron!

  • 125hp X 5252 / 1rpm = 656500 foot pounds of torque at startup!

  • Built before planned obsolesence! Amazing!

    Great video! Thanks for sharing...

  • Oh nice, it's regulated via valve cut off. Very good for effeciency that.

  • @steamnut2008 Imagine the size of the BOILER

it would take to operate an engine with this bore

& stroke at a useable RPM! You better have a coal

mine or 100 acres of trees in your backyard, too.

OR, if you could get waste oil by the barrel, use

an oil burner to fire your boiler.

With a big boiler and a large enough dynamo,

this engine could power the entire neighborhood!

  • how are they generating the steam?
