Mt. Nyiragongo (3470m) is an active volcano found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is considrered to have the largest permanent lava lake on earth. An eruption in 2002 covered the city of Goma in nearly 2m of lava. Shops on the main strip now have entrances on what used to be the second floor.
The mountain is now closed due to rebel activity in the area and had been closed on my 4 previous trips 07-09. I hiked it accompanied by military escort on my 5th trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo just after it re-opened (briefly) in March 2010.
