In Episode 2 the sun has set and we take a glimpse of the South Pole Navy at work and play. All music (except for the VMF Horseshoes scene) was performed by Polies during the winter of 2008.

  • I read an article in Science 83 (yes from 1983) about wintering-over at the South Pole. Sounded like a real challenge in the pre-information age, but is there internet at the South Pole now? I hear its spotty at best. At least there's video games now.

  • @dadsoldtapes

There is Internet available about 8-12 hours/day. Not fast, but you can blog/facebook/e-mail etc. Having access to the web can be kind of annoying because "what happens at pole" now gets blogged and folks who just want to have some fun get in trouble. Still, a winter at Pole is great!

  • @darkicefilms But probably not fast enough to play Call of Duty online. Btw is the "300-club" still around? You go into the Sauna and then run outside naked (300 degree Fahrenheit difference).

  • @dadsoldtapes

We are asked to not use bandwidth for gaming. I am guessing it isn't fast enough anyway. The 300 club is alive and kicking! I am a member.

  • @darkicefilms Yeah. Btw do you think Jarle Andhoy, the Norwegian skipper who tried to pilot an ATV to the South Pole at the end of February made it? If so I guess he'd be wintering over with you guys. But in the end given what happened with his Berserk he's on trial, and after what those ships looking for his lost crew had to deal with I hope the judge in Norway throws the book at him!

  • @dadsoldtapes

From the article I read, he didn't make it past McMurdo. Looks like he got air-lifted to NZ from MCM.

  • @darkicefilms By the time he set out on those bikes the last plane already left the pole... he probably would have joined you guys, had he made it. But nobody possibly could fathom how they would refuel so chances are if they didn't hear that their boat sunk with three crew in it and kept going they would probably have gone the way of Robert F. Scott.

  • Wooooooow! You guys are soooo cute! Amazing! :O Very nice video! :D

  • Everyone's a Peter Pan. They've never grown up.

  • @xxxbatman69xxx - yup, pretty much. It is actually 54+ hours a week. You get 1 day off per week, except for every third week you have to work 2 weeks straight. Fun place though, nice people.
