nowadays, I would recommend an SSD.
I did this when normal SSDs were not payable
Than Again, still using this setup, and no complains till now ;-)

As I do not have any harddisk in my computer, I can not tell.
But a normal harddisk will be faster for sure.
As I boot only once and then use sleep/resume, boot time is not really an issue.
I keep al my data on my network share, just as I keep my document and setting on an iSCSI Target. In that way, the CF is just to boot and nothing more.

In this case it was a slow CF card 40speed.
This speedy bootup was accomplished by use f EWF (Enhanced write filter) borrowed from XPE.
With EWF, nothing is written to the CF. Which makes everything quite fast.

How fast is the CF card (i.e. 150x, 250x or mb/s)?

The shop say it's a 120 speed, but I doubt it.
The card itself does not show a speed.
