Fake, counterfeit of Morgan Silver Dollars from China, compared to the real McCoy.

Compares the difference in appearance and weight, the 'cartwheel effect' and lustre.

More info July 2011

This video was not meant to show how to spot fake LIGHTLY WORN coins. Not really old and circulated (worn) coins. Such real, old and heavily worn coins won't have much if any lustre or cartwheel effect. For them, you need to fall back on scale and calipers, both together to be sure.

In this video, the fake coins are clearly trying to pass as lightly worn only, as the fields are not worn and scratched - so they should still show some lustre and cartwheeling - they don't as they are fake.

I have lots of well-worn Dollars and Half's like Franklins and Kennedys, that still show lustre in the fields, even though they are very worn and considered 'scrap silver'. Just get to build your experience and you won't get fooled.

  • WHO WAS THT SONG BY? I HAVENT HEARD THT IN YEARS

  • @edv177 Silver Machine by Hawkwind - sung by Lemmy- before he went on to front Motorhead!

  • ITs all coming from China is where I am reading it.

  • Yes China, our new masters the way things are going. Great :-(

  • A question for you. why the gloves? Why kind of gloves are those that you use. I handle my silver after I wash my hands. Am I in error?

  • I use gloves handling my silver coins, as the acids on the fingers will leave marks. Handling a new Silver Eagle for just a moment with bare fingers will ruin it bringing top value to a collector, something I have found out to my cost. Handling ruins the fine 'white' lustre coat that unhandled coins often have, keaving finger prints. You can clean the finger prints off, but that also removes some of the beautiful lustre. It's just good practise really, the gloves are very cheap to buy.

  • the cartwheel comes from proof like, mint state or, uncerculated your comparing a proof like one

to an worn one ,even tho they are fake lol.

  • @ben191209 you never never clean coins. it ruins the numismatic value. i guess its ok to clean something that has no value or just bullion value. example if you have a silver bullion bar thats just worth the metal then i think its ok or a coin thats not worth anything. other than that never ever clean a valuable coin. buy the whiteman 2012 red book you will learn loads about coins and prices from that. hope this helps.

  • @ben191209 no don't ever clean coins unless they have absolutely no numistical value.

  • @nashnosh how can you know when a Morgan dolalr is real, if the dollar is dirty ?

  • Would you use Silver polish to clean a 1921 morgan? It's real silver. not a chinese "clone" ;+H

  • @mongobongocat Like this guy's comment! Fight Chicrapese fakes and piles of cheap "goods"

  • I own a pawn shop, this kid just walked in with 5 Morgan dollars. Before looking at them, I asked waht he wanted. He had no idea, so I said ill give you 10 a pop of they are real and he was more than happy to get that. He said he had more, and pulled out over 90 more!!!! I almost jumped out the freakin window, thinking I was going to get 95 morgans @ 10 a pop. However, when I looked at them every single one was a CC, they stuck to a magnet, and only weighed 14grams. DARNNNNNNNNN

  • I might add that his method of the cart wheel only works on XF to Mint condition Morgans. A Poor or Fine condition coin with decades of ware will not have enough luster left to shine.
