The Beatles: Echoes of an Era
Potpourri arranged by John Higgins
Performed by the Northern Band of the Royal Swedish Army
in Stortorget, Gamla Stan in Stockholm, summer of 2001.
Conductor: Lars-Gunnar Björklund
The Northern Band of the Royal Swedish Army (in Swedish: Arméns Musikkår Norrland; or AMN for short) was established in 1993 in the garrison town of Boden, in the northern part of Sweden.
It drew its heritage from the bands of the regiments and military units situated in Boden, such as the Norrbotten Infantry regiment I 19, the Boden Artillery Regiment A 8, the Boden Engineer Corps Ing 3, and others.
The AMN consisted of conscripts, young men and women doing their ten months military duty as bandsmen.
In 2001, due to a lack of suitable conscripts, the band instead consisted of hired ex-conscripts. This arrangement turned out well, but due to financial decisions the unit was disbanded on july 31st 2001.

On a more serious note: In a medley like this you have to have the different tempi and styles of the different parts down by heart so when the change come, you have already made the change in your head, you feel the new beat and you can immediately switch to the new tempo and style when the change comes.
The hard part is to feel the new beat while playing in the old one! ;-)

Well, one tip is to live at the band barracks like we did - after a full day of performance and rehearsing you can easily add a couple of hours of personal practice, and then spend the remaining time till lights out shining your shoes... this will quickly give you results :-)
