The annual Alexis de Tocqueville Society Award is presented by United Way of Greater New Haven to an individual or couple who embody the American spirit of giving and volunteerism witnessed by Alexis de Tocqueville as he traveled the United States in the mid 1800's. De Tocqueville observed that Americans help each other in times of need and wrote, "I must say that I have seen Americans make great and real sacrifices to the public welfare, and I have noticed a hundred instances in which they hardly ever failed to lend faithful support to one another."
