California travel expert Veronica Hill of http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com goes on a whale watching tour aboard the Ocean Institute Sea Explorer in this episode of "California Travel Tips."

One of Southern California's most educational whale watching tours, the Sea Explorer offers a hands-on whale watch experience, complete with the opportunity to fish for plankton and look at it under the on-board microscope, and the chance to sort out undersea creatures brought up during the tour with the boat's benthic sampler.

Occasionally whale watching island tours are offered off of Catalina, about 22 miles from Dana Point Ocean Institute.

For the best whale watching experience, come prepared with a light jacket, binoculars, rubber-soled shoes and a camera with a good zoom lens.

Whale watching season is between November and April for the gray whales, and during the summer months for the blue whales.

During our blue whale watching cruise, we saw four blue whales, a maternal pod of common dolphins, and plenty of sea lions and pelicans.

The dolphin and whale watching cruises are offered on weekends aboard the Sea Explorer whale watching boat.

  • Thank you so much for these wonderful videos!

I am planning a big trip for me and my boyfriend this summer and you have been a great help for me! I have two questions though.

What company did you go whale whatching with? And can you recommend a good hotel in Los Angeles? My budget is max. 200 dollars pr. day.

Thank you so much in advance!

    Regards from Denmark!

  • @CecilieMarie87 Thanks for your kind words! Our trip was with the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, which I highly recommend. As for hotels in your price range, right now the Langham Huntington in Pasadena (formerly the Ritz-Cartlon) has a $199 rate. If you want to be in the heart of Downtown LA, The Standard has a $172 rate, and a $199 rate in their West Hollywood location. One of my favorite booking sites is Jetsetter. You can also find some good travel deals on Living Social.

  • @CaliforniaTravelTips Thank you so much! I'm so glad I asked you! I already looked at The Standard, but I wasn't sure if it was any good, but I trust your opinion! But the hotel in Pasadena looks AMAZING! Thank you once again! This is a fantastic channel!

  • @CecilieMarie87 You're welcome! If you want something truly special for the $200, I would stay at the Langham in Pasadena. The Standard is more of a party-style spot, if you're into that sort of thing. I hear the Downtown LA location is better, but downtown can be pretty sketchy. If you know where in LA you want to stay, I can help you find some more deals at some popular places. :)

  • @CaliforniaTravelTips .. Yeah, I just didn't want one to accidentally knock us in. It's cold water and wasn't all that warm of a day, today.

  • @ootslaton Very cool! What a great story. I can't imagine being in a kayak next to one. They were big enough next to our huge whale watching boat. What an incredible experience!

  • @CaliforniaTravelTips ...Blue!...They're right off the coast of Redondo and/or Palos Verdes right now. They've been there for a week or so, but are slowly leaving. So, if you want to go see them you should go in the next day or two... I've always wanted to see one since I was a kid and feel pretty lucky to have one come so close. Though it is a little gnarly to have one so close in such a small boat!... It's werid how great it makes you feel, just by looking at something!

  • @ootslaton Was it a gray or blue whale?

  • HA-HA! I kayaked out in Redondo and almost got knocked over by one today... Some I'm like the president and ceo of the blue whale club!

  • Sounds fun. Did you see any whales?
