This story ran on the NBC Nightly News in November 1982 regarding the odd circumstances of Swarthmore College's football team. As a post-script, an attempt by the college administration to fire Coach Lapinsky after the 1982 season failed due to overwhelming alumni support. The college finally succeeded in firing Coach Lapinsky after the team's record-breaking 1984 season, however. Rather than fire him outright, the college cleverly converted the head football coaching position from part-time (Coach Lapinsky was a high school teacher in Delaware) to full time at a ridiculously low salary that he could not accept. The underhanded college administration finally killed the football program entirely in 2000, thereby ending 122 years of football tradition at Swarthmore.
