Introduction in finnish. Max Ryynänen is an aesthetician and contemporary art critic, with a history in gallery management. He works as a lecturer of theory of visual culture at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, at the Pori School of Art and Media. In his scholarly work Ryynänen has, besides contemporary art, focused on kitsch, urban aesthetics, and terrorism, with a philosophical base rooted in Italian philosophy, American pragmatism, and Nordic applied aesthetics, following studies at the universities of Helsinki, Uppsala, Pisa, and Temple Philadelphia. Lately Ryynänen has collaborated with Festivals in Transition by teaching European theatre critics at the Riga and Ljubljana international theatre festivals.
