In a Republican presidential debate Thursday night, Mitt Romney mocked his GOP rival Newt Gingrich for his proposal to create a lunar colony and accused Gingrich of pandering to Florida's Space Coast.

@KiNGKoDeCKS - The hundreds of satellites that orbit earth beyond the atmosphere, the space station, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Apollo missions, in transit, and while on the moon, did not, and do not, have any significant trouble with comet or asteroid collisions. The gravity issue is a problem. But problems don't get solved until people step up and try to solve them. The people who worked on the Apollo missions solved lots of problems (with God's help).

@HomewardBoundJournal That is not what I meant by "no atmosphere". Atmosphere acts as a shield. Why do you think the moon is filled with craters. Space debris hits it hard. They'd have to spend billions to repair Gingrich Moon Base 01 every month. People can't stay permanently in less than Earth gravity. Gingrich was talking a permanent place to live on the moon. Also why go to the moon? Nothing there.
