@StJimmy0815 my neighbour drove a T3 diesel work van for years... Though the T4 was much better, it was also much more expensive, so he drove a Toyota van untill his retirement.
by the way, i mixed it up: The 2.4 inline 6 was based on the inline four 1.6, not on the later 1.9: the 2.5 shares design with the 1.9 TDI.

@RenzeZielman i dont know what you understood, but i tought about the lt ;) otherwise i would have called those transporters you are thinking about t1/t2/t3...

@RenzeZielman think you missunderstood me, i did not thought about the t1/t2/t3 vw transporters ;) those transporters got in most cases the engine of the vw beetle, and those engines werent even diesels...

@StJimmy0815 correction: I wasnt sure about my memory, so according to Wikipedia, the Transporter 2 and 3 did have the inline 4 diesels, next to boxer gas engines.

@StJimmy0815 When VW swapped from rear mounted boxers, to transverse mounted inline engines in the Transporter 4, the 2.5 TDI was also used in them, next to the 1.9 TDI. The current T5 still uses the 2.5 TDI engine, with common rail injection. The Audi A6 nowadays has a new V6 2.5 TDI which is a totally new design. The 2.5TDI nowadays is the basic diesel for VW's SUVs (badged R5 2.5 TDI as a basic diesel, next to the V6 2.5 TDI) and the main engine in VW's commercial Transporter and Crafter

@StJimmy0815 Sorry mate, the 2.4 inline 6 was never used in a Transporter... In the era that that engine was produced, the Transporters still had 4 cylinder boxer diesels. The inline six was developed out of the 1.9 IDI four, to replace the Perkins diesel which VW used in the early LT in the late 70's. The Perkins was a disaster which had been sold for only a year or two, before being replaced by the 2.4 inline six.

@RenzeZielman the d24 (6 cyl.) is bought from vw, originally built in a transporter. the 5cyl came from the audi a6... i think the 2.5 did not find place in a newer transporter...
