A landmine exploded when paratroopers were on a routine patrol at Jori village in the Gumla district. Two are dead nine others injured.
[N. K. Singh, Superintendent of Police]:
"This is a sad incident. Maoists have planted a landmine in the middle of a road. The vehicle was blown up. We are raiding Maoist hideouts and will take the necessary actions."
The injured personnel were admitted to the district hospital. Reportedly, four of the injured troopers are in a serious condition.
Maoist rebels have called for a boycott of legislative assembly polls in Jharkhand. They have intensified their violent activities before people hit the polls.
Last Thursday, Maoists blew up a railway track derailing a passenger train in West Singhbhum district.
The Maoist rebellion has now spread to about 20 of India's 29 states. The rebels are targeting police and government property in hit-and-run attacks.
Jharkhand is among the states worst affected by Maoist violence.
