The first part of the series explains the origins of Islamism and Neo-Conservatism. It shows Egyptian civil servant Sayyid Qutb, depicted as the founder of modern Islamist thought, visiting America to learn about the education system, but becoming disgusted with what he saw as a corruption of morals and virtues in western society through individualism. When he returns to Egypt, he is disturbed by westernization under President Nasser and becomes convinced that in order to save society it must be completely restructured along the lines of Islamic law while still using western technology. He also becomes convinced that this can only be accomplished through the use of an elite "vanguard" to lead a revolution against the established order. Qutb becomes a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood and, after being tortured in one of Nasser's jails, comes to believe that western-influenced leaders can justly be killed for the sake of removing their corruption. Qutb is executed in 1966, but he inspires the future mentor of Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, to start his own secret Islamist group. Inspired by the 1979 Iranian revolution, Zawahiri and his allies assassinate Egyptian president Anwar Al Sadat, in 1981, in hopes of starting their own revolution. The revolution does not materialise, and Zawahiri comes to believe that the majority of Muslims have been corrupted by their western-inspired leaders and thus may be legitimate targets of violence if they do not join him.

At the same time in the United States, a group of disillusioned liberals, including Irving Kristol and Paul Wolfowitz, look to the political thinking of Leo Strauss after the general failure of President Johnson's "Great Society". They come to the conclusion that the emphasis on individual liberty was the undoing of the plan. They envisioned restructuring America by uniting the American people against a common evil, and set about creating a mythical enemy. These factions, the Neo-Conservatives, came to power under the Reagan administration, with their allies Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, and work to unite the United States in fear of the Soviet Union. The Neo-Conservatives allege the Soviet Union is not following the terms of disarmament between the two countries, and, with the investigation of "Team B", they accumulate a case to prove this with dubious evidence and methods. President Reagan is convinced nonetheless.

  • @gmcjetpilot "Jews aren't flying planes into buildings..."

I have a feeling you deeply believe this. However, if you look around just a little you will see that it is, in fact, a lie. Jews and Christians are killing more people every day than any group in the world, throughout history. The weapons of the West are more sophisticated than the "terrorists" but much more destructive too. All we need to do it open our eyes!

  • @3rw42 Christians, like all the world's "religions," spread hate everywhere. It is a simple fact. The only peeps who don't know this is Christians themselves. It is childish to say, "These folks spread hate too" as this is merely justification for injustice. To live a life that is right and just one must end their attachment to all these evil, mindless "religions."

  • @3rw42 "although I'd argue most conflicts - including the Muslim ones aren't religious conflicts)" Perhaps, but it is the people themselves who belong to these religions that are committing the atrocities, right? Religion is a key component in their denial. The motivator for Christians, Jews and Muslims to make such war is fear and hate, which is the same motivator to accept childish beliefs. So, the underlying cause is the same, whether these barbarians claim to be murdering over God or not.

  • @FathomlessJoy Since WW2 - Muslim conflicts (Muslim on Muslim mostly but many Muslim on Christian/Blacks ones particularly in Africa) have killed millions (millions for Muslim vs. Muslim and Muslim vs. Other). So in fact, Muslims have killed more than Jews and Christians combined since WW2 (although I'd argue most conflicts - including the Muslim ones aren't religious conflicts).

    It's not a competition though.

  • I thought a 'vanguard party' was a Marxist concept?

  • @KhushaKhanKhattak But you don't count that the iraqi war isn't a religious war and not every soldier in the US army is a christian. Vietnam war wasnt a religious war and not every soldier is a christian and the same counts for Afghanistan. So you are wrong, if you look at Islam you see that they kill alot because of a religious motive, but the US just kills for economic or idealogic motives. Which is equally terrible but not the same.

  • @CoolKidX85 3000 americans die on september 11, 1 million innocent iraqis mostly new borns and there mothers die from sanctions then add the number of casualties in combat western forces have lost maybe 10000 soldiers where as that doesnt even match the civilian numbers of the places they occupy also add vietnam the contras, afghanistan and you begin to paint a picture... and US and europe claim to be christian states and you cant even deny israeli bombings and killings of arabs

  • @Fonzie8819 so... america isnt a democracy? because democracy = government is the joint and true will of the people is it not... do you not as an american trot around and say you are a beacon in the world purely because your government DOES represent the will of the american people think before you speak unless you admit america is socialist

  • @FathomlessJoy Are christians and jews killing more every day than any other group? On what do you base this? Maybe through all of history yeah, but nowadays?

  • Damn, thought it was a documentary for nightmares. Never mind. >_>
