Do video games like Call of Duty and other military-based first person shooter games trivialize, and desensitize people to, war? Should Ron Paul be the 2012 Presidential Candidate of choice for active duty service members? Do veterans get the appropriate health care and job opportunities when they get back home? Michael Shure (host of TwenTYTwelve) leads this weeks panel to discuss these issues and more with Michael Prysner (Iraq war veteran, co-founder of March Forward), Sheryl Shaffer (host of Veterans Helping Veterans), and Robert Vaughn (CA State Coordinator of the Ron Paul 2012 Presidential Campaign). Special thanks to Kevin Rooney (Emmy Award Winning Comedy Writer), and Adam Kokesh (activist and former marine, host of Adam Vs The Man) for sending in points.

This is why I have far more respect for ancient warfare. The king was expected to go to war with his men, if he declared war. Could you imagine if Barack Obama or George W. Bush would have to go to war in the same way that Alexander the Great or Genghis Khan had to go to war, and put their own lives on the line. I guarantee you they wouldn't be so quick to perpetuate warfare that only lines the pockets of corporate America.

People are just stupid about the military. I refuse to believe that military personnel are inherently better than I am. I do not have to take care of you. I do not have to respect you more than I respect my fellows. You made your choices and they have not protected me or my freedoms.

Also; should the president have to have served as an accountant to tell us what to do with huge life-changing issues like the economy? Then why should he have to have served in the military?

Yes, George Washington did serve in the revolution, and that was a necessary war, and not merely a war used to serve the military industrial complex. Of course, like any leader who has actually served in war, and knows the horrors of it, he tried to avoid going to war as much as possible, when he became President.

Referring to recent wars. The claim is often made that our soldiers are "fighting for our lives/freedom". But that implies that wars we fight overseas have critical importance to maintaining freedom and safety at home... which they do not. The question "do we need a military" has an obvious and unfortunate answer. The question, "is the current scope and execution of the military close to efficient?" also has an unfortunate and obvious answer.

What do you mean? I read your whole comment. I was asking about your last sentence in your first paragraph.

So you think if we had no military you would be perfectly safe?

While I believe that violent video games desensitize people to violence, I'm not so sure about war. I'm very anti-war almost to the point of pacifism due to playing Halo. There was a scene in Call of Duty: Black Ops where the Russians (who you are playing as at the time) are executing prisoners that made me cringe. There's another scene where the NVA make you play Russian roulette. Spec Ops: The Line makes you feel terrible about the decisions that you have to make. It depends on your mindset.

I remember playing World at War. Not only did it show brutality committed by the Axis, but also the Allies(Mostly the Russians, cause Americans never do wrong, right?).

We often joke about how the Russians treat their soldiers in all its history. Yet we seem to shy away from our own.
