Tuli's favorite quatrains from the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam as translated by Edward Fitzgerald, set to music by Tuli. Also titled Shadows of Paradise and sung by Ed Sanders on the Fugs double CD "The Real Woodstock Festival." Tuli told me this is one of the songs he would most like to be remembered by. Rubaiyat collage by Tuli , Edmund J. Sullivan illustrations colored by Thelma. Video and off camera voice: Thelma Blitz. This is Tuli's last video and last recorded statement, May 15, 2010 at Tuli's loft in Soho, Manhattan approximately two months before he left the planet.

"Myself when young did eagerly frequent master and saint, and heard great argument about it and about: but evermore came out by the same door as in I went.

Some for the Glories of This World; and some
Sigh for the Prophet's Paradise to come;
Ah, take the Cash, and let the Credit go,
Nor heed the rumble of a distant Drum!

A loaf of bread, a jug of wine and thou
Besides me singing in the wilderness
Oh, wilderness. Ah wilderness
Wilderness were paradise enough ( or enow).

A loaf of bread, a jug of wine and thou, dear Tuli makes me happy knowing you're well. You are a cherished person with a magnifcent mind. Love you, Love you, Love you!

It was one of my favorite poems too. In fact, I parodied it in the Last Supplement to the Whole Earth Catalog. Kesey had written page after page after page of "Tools From My Chest"--so many that all I did was have one "tool," a photo of a fur-covered cup, saucer and spoon, with the heading "Tools From My Chest" and a caption, "A loaf of bread, a jug of carrot juice and this fur-covered cup, saucder and spoon are all I need." --pk

    A message for Tuli.

What an unexpected pleasure! The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam became one of my favorite poems when I was in high school and I read it in a book of poems my mother gave me for Chanukah. I still have the book and although the pages are yellow and falling out, I still read the poem.

Now I can sing the song, along with you. Thank you!

My fondest regards to you, dear Tuli.

    Love,

    Walli Leff

  • Tuli, you will be greatly missed. Rest in peace.

  • Here I am again, with my new computer, Tuli, so I think it'll work this time. I see that my test about a month ago actually did take, but I was so convinced it hadn't, I didn't even check back. Testing, again, even so, since I'm not the only one who's had problems with posting here. Oh no! It's saying "Error, try again"! ~ Lizzy

  • I'm testing so I can try responding again. When I last tried, it wouldn't post and then it disappeared.

  • Love and Nature give us all and more than we need. It's kind to see Tuli still singing in spite of suffering many pains. Thanks to be there to catch and share these moments.
