This is a beautiful traditional Irish tune performed by Rory Gallagher in Lorient on the 20th of October '94. This is a very old tune but was only given lyrics and this name at the start of the twentieth century.

I think Rory is tuned to DADGAD and plays it in D mixolydian.

Note that this version is the intro to "Out on the Western Plain," like most other times he played it in the 90s. againstthegrain57 has already posted the full two parts plus an Anne Briggs version at the start, however i just wanted the "She Moved Thro' the Fair" part alone.

  • can some1 answer me dis did rory copy jimmi or the oder way round cos listin to jimmy pages song White Summer/Black Mountain Side and it sounds nerly da same as dis..plz answer me nice1

  • Well copy is a harsh word. Jimmy Page's "Black Mountain Side" is based on Bert Jansch's "Black Waterside." Bert Jansch in turn was hugely influenced by Davey Graham who is the man who popularised, and some say invented, the tuning DADGAD. Davey Graham also played "She Moved Thro' The Fair" in this tuning and so did Bert Jansch and then Jimmy Page incorporated elements of it into "White Summer/Black Mountainside."

  • Rory is Irish so he, like me or a lot of other Irish people, would have heard the tune "She Moved Thro' The Fair" while growing up. The tune isn't native to guitar so Rory probably chose to play it on guitar because he was influenced by Bert Jansch and probably Davey Graham but would probably have known it anyway.

So to answer your question neither Gallagher or Page copied it off eachother but people will say Page copied it from Jansch.

  • @shanenorberg neither as this is a traditional irish song that dates back hundreds of years

  • @ThrashRoC You must be stunned,to make a comment like that, theres only 36 seconds of this clip.He was a great Strat player, but if you check out any clips of him playing acoustic you may realize he was one of the best guitarist's ever.

  • sorry , rory , but could you just play your strat please ?

i like rory gallhager , and he s a hell of a cool strat cat , but this was not good ...sounds like hes learning tis song

  • Wher's the the final part of this clip? Doen't seem to be available. Does anyone know where to find it?

  • lll

  • Why does this clip only last 36 seconds ? I'd rather see the rest of this clip more than anything else.

  • @abuchalmers

No. The banjo tuning you have in mind (for some versions of "Shady Groves", "The Cuckoo" etc.) is gDGCD and so has little to do with the DADGAD guitar tuning.

  • Could you please upload the "Out on the western plain" that followed after this? There used to be a video of it but it got deleted.

  • @Lizzardpeople I put links in for you but it read error when I tried to post it. Search for "Shady Grove," "Lady Margaret," and "The Cuckoo" on YouTube. They are all songs in the mixolydian mode which are commonly played on banjo in the G modal or sawmill tuning, the DADGAD tuning in G without the two bottom strings.

  • Davey Graham certainly did not invent DADGAD tuning. It's been used by generations of american banjo players. The tuning facilitates playing in mixolydian mode, the major scale with a diminished seventh.
