de stille hik
Inspired by Neil Shubin's 'Your Inner Fish' , A book about Human evolution and its link to the worldwide evolution of all species, tells us the history of the human body, and shows that hiccups are a direct result of our body's past. In which it has developed from one-cell organisms through eras of sub aquatic life, as fish.

At one specific period in the evolution of fish, some of them become equipped with lungs, others have further developed fins/paws that have actual hand-like bone structures within. (Tiktaalik)

Those Fish with lungs (actually called lungfish) have got the hiccups to actually survive while swimming, if not, it would drown. since the water would enter their lungs, instead of passing trough their gills which makes them extract oxygen from the water.
In our evolutionary history our mind is programmed to close of the lungs while Inhaling so many times, it has become an instinct-driven mechanism for our survival.
Now, milions of years later, our mind still, at times, uses this mechanism when we inhale. Only we stopped inhaling water, since we (our bodies) have developed into the air, but our milions of years old Insticts still remind us of our common and shared past when we originated from the deep blue sea.
