This is a cervical mucus plug shed during normal labor a term of pregnancy.
Notice the stickiness and the consistency comparable to that of chewed vine gum

  • But dont worry if this plug comes early. Your baby's head acts like the plug...until labour begins :)

  • This plug is so the amniotic fluids dont leak out and also to prevent infections. It's what keeps baby safe from the real world. Soon after, or even at the same time your plug is passed, you may see a "bloody show," which can indicate that labour is just around the corner. A bloody show is not the plug itself...it's a completely different thing where your underwear or toilet paper have a pinkish or brownish discharge.

  • .....

  • Dr. Uldbjerg--did you happen to save this in a freezer? I am looking for a mucus plug for my research. Some of the MDs I have talked to say "oh, that's too hard to get" But there it is!

  • A mucus plug looks different for everyone. It is also called a "bloody show" the colour and consistency can be different and it can come out before your baby is due. This plug is meant to keep out infection from harming you and your baby. If it does come out early do see your doctor so they can check you regularly.

Don't worry healthcare professionals deal with this every day and I have delivered many babies so far this year. Remember blood doesn't occur with every mucus plug

  • I think I lost my mucus plug! It was white/clear and slimy. No bood. is that normal?

  • Well nevermind i guess. I'm now 35 weeks!

  • this is amazing.. God knew what he was doing when he made us :)
