No, that's not how it works: They say: "I wonder how old this fossil is. Let's check how old the rocks are we found them in. Oh, we haven't got a date yet for those rocks. Oh, we don't know how old the fossil is yet, so let's look at the rocks..." and after turning in circles a couple of times, they say "Dangit....let's just invent something."
