A CBC show from the early 1960s called Three Guitars, with Lenny Breau, Jim Pirie, and Ron Halldorson.

Ronny went on to become Lenny's bassist of choice for many years. However, Jim Pirie seems to be one of those "whatever happened to" stories. I know nothing else about him, except that on this video he is easily on Lenny's level - both as a jazz AND flamenco player - and that says something. (if anybody has any information on Jim Pirie, please contact me, I'm very curious about it)
Anyway.... enjoy!

  • Don't ever take this down from youtube! It's amazing! Is there a version of this on MP3???

  • I'm afraid there isn't.

There is a full version of this show which remains in the CBC's vaults (if I'm not mistaken) and has yet to be officially released.

  • geosochi Chet Breau, or Emily Hughes should be able to get the master copy from the CBS vaults and make an official release.

  • Yes they should! I expect a lot of Lenny material to surface in the near future.

  • I apologize for the 30 seconds of vacuum at the beginning of this clip; I wish I could edit these things more accurately.

    Please enjoy!

  • Great version of The Song is You. I love seeing Lenny's earlier stuff before drugs stole his life later on. He was one of the greatest in my eyes.

  • Yeah... Absolute precision all around. Thanks for this

  • they could have been teh Canadian reply to "California Guitar Trio",instead, only Lenny became (even if very little) known and recognized years afterwards of the three

  • I dunno. Looks like they're just standing there miming a record. Nobody's plugged into an amp, and 1960's wireless technology sucked. And would it have killed them to actually light the musicians?

  • cannot thank you enough for uploading this. What a gem.

moments at 2:15 are like waking up to a heavenly chorus of birdsong

  • I'm so jealous, why do we get American Idol and crappy pop music on TV- IT'S NOT FAIR!! It's about f...king time showcase talent again.

  • Sweet vid

  • This tune is really nice.

Jimmy Pirie, from wpg, home of many fine guitar players, still.

I think He played the theme song to the Max Ferguson show on CBC radio, it was a tune known as "the clarinet polka" it was outstanding.

I would like to see/hear more Jimmy Pirie.

  • Sends chills down my spine everytime I see the absolutely confident Lenney...:)

  • I'm a Lenny Breau fanatic, I'm in love with the guy, started a therapy group for people like me...... Lenny was so hot...I'd be equally honoured if you joined the group and shared some of your personal feelings on Lenny for those who are equally warped and deranged.

  • @radioactiveroach indeed, they transcended the jazz 'thing' here, to something even greater.
