Dee Dee Sharp (born Dione LaRue, September 9, 1945, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States[1]) is an American R&B singer, who began her career recording as a backing vocalist in 1961. The first black female teen idol, Sharp also became a fixture on Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars tours, and a familiar face in the popular 16 Magazine.
In 1962 she began a string of successful Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 hits: "Slow Twistin'" (with Chubby Checker) (#3), "Mashed Potato Time" (#2), "Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes)" (#9), "Ride!" (#5) and "Do the Bird" (#10).[1] Sharp and Checker joined together and recorded an album entitled Down to Earth, one of nine albums Cameo Records released of Sharp's.[1]

Languishing record sales prompted her exit from Cameo to Atco/Atlantic Records.[1] Three singles appeared from 1966 to 1968 including a duet with Ben E. King on "Whatcha Gonna Do About It".[1] The tracks, recorded mostly in Memphis, Tennessee, were short of promotion and Gamble Records went on to issue three Sharp singles.[1] In 1967 she married record producer Kenny Gamble and has since recorded under the name Dee Dee Sharp-Gamble.[1] Two more singles appeared on Gamble & Huff's TSOP record label, including the album, Happy 'Bout the Whole Thing.[1] She then signed with Philadelphia International Records for five more singles and "Conquer the World Together," another duet this time with Bunny Sigler (billed as David Siqler).[1]

She had a brief career resurgence during the disco era: as a member of the Philadelphia International All Stars (which also included Lou Rawls, Billy Paul, Teddy Pendergrass, The O'Jays and Archie Bell) she had a minor hit with "Let's Clean Up the Ghetto."

In 1981 she spent four weeks at number one on the Hot Dance Club Play chart with "Breaking and Entering" / "Easy Money," from her album Dee Dee.

She divorced Gamble in 1980 but maintained good visibility via television, tours, concerts, and club dates that took her around the world.[1] Sharp also appeared in films, including Desperately Seeking Susan, Don't Knock the Twist, Hairspray, Sister Act, and Troop Beverly Hills.[1]

Sharp remarried to Bill Witherspoon, and has previously been linked romantically with Gene Chandler, Muhammad Ali, and David Ruffin.[1] Recent appearances include a performance at Pontin's in the UK for the Northern Soul Show and the 2008 Detroit Jazz Festival. May, 2009 is a scheduled appearance in Belgium at the Salle De L'Hotel de Ville.
