Regular brushing with a regular dog brush is good as you will see your Portie will pick up a lot of burrs, etc. in the woods. You have to take him to a dog groomer every few months to get him cut. Brio is in what they call the 'retriever cut'.

According to the AKC, this breed is a Working dog while retrievers are Sporting dogs. But the breed gets it roots from German Shorthaired Pointers and Poodles.

portuguese fishermans used this dogs in the same way the hunters uses their dogs when they shot a duck the dog goes there to grab, the portuguese water dog used to jump the boat and get the fish.

I am from the Portuguese region where that dog comes from (the Algarve). I see lot's of these dogs everywhere, on every street.

@fearedlegend No it isn't!! I'm Portuguese, i know an owner of a dog of this breed who also happens to be a veterinarian and i've 100% sure that is : Cão de água português.

I have a portie named Cau de La (means dog of wool in potuguese) He is all white with 1 black spot over his right eye, and his right ear is completely black. They are pretty easy to train, but they bite. Alot.

@alexandernaepolean because during the Discoverys the sailmans usually brougth animals to do some company and because this dog wasn't afraid of water or traveling they brougth many of this dogs :D
