Demonstration of the 6DOF view control using webcam with my Face API 2 PPJoy program in the IL-2. This program uses the head pose data provided by the FaceAPI ( http://www.seeingmachines.com/product/faceapi/ ) and forwards the data into the PPJoy virtual joystick. The PPJoy joystick is then used as the input for the tir4fun utility, which emulates the TrackIR. Finally - these TrackIR data are used by the IL-2. It is not as precise as the TrackIR or FreeTrack (although i have tested neither), but it is an interesting thing to try out, if you do not want to build your own FreeTrack device and be lit up like a christmas tree.
Binaries and source can be downloaded from http://members.chello.cz/stranky/faceapi2ppjoy.htm

I got bored with it, so there probably will not be any updates by me on this. You are welcome to modify it to your liking. You might start by fixing the bugs which are still there :)

  • I've written a driver for faceApi by myself for PPJoy too, but I must say, that faceAPI is still very crappy when it comes to use of typical webcams. It needs 60fps cam. I spent many hours designing software filters that filtered out all peaks in face movement that wasn't really a movement. As for me it was a waste of time after all, and now I bought TrackIR in promo and problem solved. No solution with faceAPI will be as good as TrackIR is now, until someone provides a real driver.

  • where can I get this software, mate?

  • @dogzer Look for links in the description of this video.

  • The power supply of my server has failed, so the files are currently unavailable. Stay tuned. It should be fixed in about one week.

  • Ok, I fixed my issue, however, after following all of the instructions, setting up a PPJoy and then setting up the tir4fun and go into the game, I'm not sure what to do next, LMAO, heh.... I have to get the game to recognize it...

  • @hal3246 If the game has control settings for directly specifying the device axes for controlling head movements (for example Arma) - set them directly to use the PPJoy axes and try to avoid the TrackIR interface at all costs. It just adds additional overhead and the tir4fun emulation also generates (at least in my case) HUGE amounts of log data which I do not know how to avoid.
