Unfortunately there is one very important aspect of life that is not free of monopoly and that is our education system.
Many corporations around the country are demanding a more educated and well trained workforce so that they can be competitive in the global market. Several years ago the Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory School of Houston was opened to students of families whose average income was $36,000 or less. This school is part of a network of 24 schools in 22 cities and DC. Over 1300 corporations have invested money as well as human resources to educate 6,500 students, 95% of whom are of color. Nationally 100% of the students have been accepted to 2 or 4 year colleges. The Cristo Rey Jesuit school in Houston has over 40 plus blue ribbon companies as corporate sponsors. Please see the attached list with my written testimony (below). Charles Swanson, Managing Partner with the Houston office of Ernst & Young has said: "Our partnership with Cristo Rey Jesuit has been truly a 'Win/Win' arrangement. The students are working here at our firm one day a week, to fund their college prep education. For the majority of the students, they will be the first in their families to ever go to college. For our firm, this program showcases Ernst & Young's commitment to the community and development of 21st century talent. Individuals like these Cristo Rey Jesuit students will be the workforce of the future. We are pleased to have them working in our office. In addition, we believe linking with a college prep high school will advance our firm's recruiting and human resource objectives."
