In this episode, I tackle a completely unknown gem of a title called Flying Warriors.
WHAT I LEARNED:
Flying Warriors is a sidescrolling platformer/beat-em-up for the NES. There is a jump button, kick button, and a basic defense option which seems to be only for specific fights. When you are playing the main game, you are able to move freely and attack whenever you want, but when you get into what I presume are "boss fights" like the first EIGHT GOD DAMN MINUTES OF THIS VIDEO, you switch to a more fighter-styled type of gameplay where you gain access to hitting in different parts of the body, blocking, and dodging.
Sounds good on paper, but the execution of this gameplay mode is so fucking clunky, shitty, and unresponsive that it's barely playable.
Also, this game is hard. Or I'm just terrible at it. WHATEVER.
You should give the first game of this series a shot which is also on the NES. It's simply called Flying Dragon. It's an early gen NES game so the graphics are really primitive compared to this game. I believe Flying Warriors is the second in the series while the third is Japan only for the Famicom. These games are all under Culture Brain's Hiryu no Ken series. Before I leave here, I remember an SNES version that's a remake or continuation of this game and it's called Ultimate Fighter.
