When utilising the high speed option, the gear box shortcuts the drive into the second planetary stage, hence this winch is a true mechanical 2 speed and not an electronic 2 speed that simply forces extra voltage through the motor.

Dropping 1/3 of the drive train will have the same effect on the load the winch can pull. Hence it will only pull 3000lbs and is certainly only for no load situations as mentioned in the video.

This is not the first 2 speed winch for 4WD's Bamford & Smith designed 2 speed winches years ago with a solenoid to change gear. A switch on the hand controller activated it .
