Speculative Submarine - From London to Venice

DESCRIPTION
Speculative Submarine is a submergible vessel undertaking two simultaneous journeys a real journey through the canals of London and a hypothetical journey through Venice. The idea is manifest in a model constructed from materials used in gondola making, and elements from deconstructed cameras. The model works at two scales to mirror the two realms in which it exists; as a real 1:1 interactive viewing device and a theoretical 1:24 scale model submarine. The speculative submarine travels along a route on the canals in London towards Little Venice taking in images of its external surroundings, and manipulating them to
create an internal environment that attempts to achieve an unimaginable representation of Venice. The project culminated in a filmed installation, in which these elements are brought together by using anamorphic projection techniques.

PROFILE
Daniel Swift Gibbs graduated from The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL in 2008, with First Class Honours. His work has been exhibited both in London and Norwich, and featured in the publication Bartlett Designs: Speculating with Architecture, a collection of the best student work from the last decade.
