Interpreting Ukrainian Bread Decor - Тлумачення прикрас укр. хліба

The Cap Family in Winnipeg celebrates Teresa's first birthday. Symon's Godmother and Winnipeg Korovainytsya (korovai baker), Yaroslava Demko, is an invited guest. She unexpedtedly bakes a non-traditional Ukrainian korovai for Teresa's birthday. Usually korovai's are round, circular in formation and are baked for special occassions like weddings or anniversaries, but today is different. Today is Teresa's first birthday. Also, this korovai is heart shaped, because as the Korovainytsya says, "It comes from the heart." She provides us with an explanation of the decorations.
The bird in the middle is Teresa and it has blue eyes because Teresa has blue eyes. The bird that climbed on top of her is for good luck. The surrounding birds are Dad (Ihor), Mom (Dariya) and Теresa's brother (Symon). The other birds are Dad's parents (Grandma Walentina and Grandpa Ilko). Opposite to them are Mom's parents (Grandmother Neonila and Grandfather Mykhailo). Godparents Bohdan and Tanya stand opposite to the parents of Teresa and her brother. The sprinkled stars are the rest of the family members, cousins, acquaintances and all good people wherever they may be. The red flower is used for contrast although folklore has it that the leaves of this flower resemble the shield and the head of the flower, the helmet of the defeated enemy. It's the Nasturtium.
