Mike & The Mechanics' 1989 "The Living Years" with lyrics below. Enjoy!

LYRICS:

Every generation
Blames the one before
And all of their frustrations
Come beating on your door

I know that I'm a prisoner
To all my Father held so dear
I know that I'm a hostage
To all his hopes and fears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years

Crumpled bits of paper
Filled with imperfect thought
Stilted conversations
I'm afraid that's all we've got

You say you just don't see it
He says it's perfect sense
You just can't get agreement
In this present tense
We all talk a different language
Talking in defence

Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late when we die
To admit we don't see eye to eye

So we open up a quarrel
Between the present and the past
We only sacrifice the future
It's the bitterness that lasts

So Don't yield to the fortunes
You sometimes see as fate
It may have a new perspective
On a different day
And if you don't give up, and don't give in
You may just be O.K.

Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late when we die
To admit we don't see eye to eye

I wasn't there that morning
When my Father passed away
I didn't get to tell him
All the things I had to say

I think I caught his spirit
Later that same year
I'm sure I heard his echo
In my baby's new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years

Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late when we die
To admit we don't see eye to eye

  • This song has so much meaning...

We are holding on to my father's dear life right now. I'm glad that I've said what I needed to him. We are losing hope but I know through God, he will be safe. He will always be my hero!

  • I am listening to an almost.....Today my hubby spoke to his dad for the first time in 18 years....and I am so happy for both of them.....The look on my husbands face....just indescribable

  • Damn song brings tears to my eyes every time...Miss ya, Dad. Sorry for all those lost years...

  • prophetic words put to a song, fantastic.

  • Everyone talks about their father because he mentions his father in the song but the magic of this message is to tell EVERYONE how you really feel and work things out before its too late.

  • cracking song.

  • @tossercunt1 the lyrics are below

  • My Dad passed on 4 weeks ago today. While driving last week this song played on the radio. i haven't heard it in years. The tears came and i sang aong so loud. Now listening he missed the birth of his 1st grandhild's birth. Sophia Victoria on 1/5/12. . i always loved this song and now it has a truly special meaning. Thank you

  • Radio stations always cut out paragraphs 3 and 4. That's why I hate radio. If I was an artist I wouldn't let anyone change anything regardless of royalty. THIS is my art; if it isn't good enough for you, that's not my problem.

  • I never knew the title and artist until recently. I remember when this was a new hit on the radio overplayed to death, it just permeated into me and grated on my nerves. Now I love it :D

  • CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME THE FULL LYRICS PLEASE. aimiuwu2@yahoo.com
