The first podcast explaining the process of the building of replica of the V&T Lyon. The "Lyon" was built in 1869 by the Union Iron Works in San Francisco for the Virginia and Truckee Railroad in Carson City, Nevada. The original "Lyon" was scrapped in the 1890's. In 1994 the construction of a replica "Lyon" began. This podcast is one of many that will explain the process of the construction.

  • The construction of the Lyon is a separate entity to the construction of the Leviathan. The building of the Lyon continues as we speak. The "adopt a part" program is going very well, with the steam chests and packing glands completed. The builder's plates are out for casting. The pilot parts and the cab bracket parts are waiting to be fitted up and welded. We have had a offer to build the cab and are looking for wood donation. Many more exciting things are happening. Thanks for your interest!

  • I also talked with Chad O'Connor about building replicas of the General and Texas. We have the original locomotives in the Atlanta area and measurements could be taken directly from each locomotive. When the project was announced, the Black community was outraged! They never had a solid reason for not wanting the replicas but everyone bowed to pressure and the project was dropped.

  • WHAT WAS TH BEGGINNING MUSIC!?

  • Whats her current status?

  • Looks as though ye're on schedule on a tough project. The original construction documents for Union Iron Works Serial Nos. 11 through 13 were of course lost in the April 1906 fire, so the new V&TRR #1 requires a lot of detective work.

  • What has happened in the 2 months scence Chris has asked, and will she have a number plate? Still I can't wait to see her under steam... and maybe the Ormsby will hit the rails next and be operated on the V&T, a man can dream.

  • No problem. Thanks for making it clear. Wes Beris stated that it was changed to the Laviathan, but I'm glad that 2 new engines are being built instead of 1. I saw pictures of both of them, and they truely are beautiful beyond all reason. No doubt Laviathan looks like she'll be up by 2011, and hopefully the Lyon too.

  • Wasn't the construction cancelled and changed to the CP Levathan #63? It is stated that in Steam locomotive information.

  • They hope to have her ready in time to be at the grand opening of the reconstructed Virginia & Truckee railroad in 2011 (if that is the right completion date).
