Total commitment... Rusty Long (San Clemente, CA) nuts up in huge fashion and pulls in at Mavs in the wee hours of the morning before the start of the Maverick's Surf Contest on February 13. An entry in one category or another of the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards.

@bartjuhbeekmans not a minute, more like 15-30 seconds...all depends if you get sucked out the back...but the water at mavs is very cold (think ice cream freeze)...

@fivedollarsworth yes u are under for about a min or so.... but there arent multiple waves right soon after. and also there are a lot of boats and jetski's to pick u up ;)

I don't see how these guys survive that heavy of a wave, just watching almost killed me.. I'll stick with the occasional San O' summer weekend, and El Porto in the winter.

he looked like he was in the right spot on the take off and he made a nice bottom turn and really he was following the contour of the wave - sometimes you just don't make it out. I bet the air pressure made his ears ring just before he got pounded thru his board...saw that happen to owl chapman one time at wiamea- wave drove him right thru his board.
