Amazon Hope cut in two

The Amazon Hope (1) medical ship cut in two in Da Costa dry (floating) dock in Iquitos, ready for lengthening by 10 metres. 29-05-07

Amazon Hope 1 arrived in Iquitos, Peru in 2001, and since then it has been serving rural communities in Loreto as a medical ship. It is being lengthened by 10 metres to make room for more consultation rooms, a pharmacy, dental surgery, and operating theatre onboard, and to reduce its draft in the water to enable it to reach communities further up rivers in Loreto.

The Amazon Hope medical project is run by The Vine Trust and Scripture Union Peru (partner organisations) to provide health services to some of the poorest and most isolated communities in the Peruvian Amazon.

They pull the ship apart becorse?

1: If they need extra cargo area or just extra place.

2: The engine needs to be replaced, and the size of the engine makes it more costly just splitting the ship in half, then they will have the space they need for the replacement.
