Plymouth police on Sunday identified the driver killed when his car slammed into the Super Stop & Shop at Myles Standish Plaza as James Blake, a store employee. Blake, an employee at the store, had to be extricated from the car was trapped in the wreckage until he was freed by rescue workers. He was taken to Jordan Hospital, where he died. The crash occurred at 6:45 a.m. Saturday and no one inside the store was injured. Stop & Shop spokesman Robert Keane said Sunday that Lake was a front-end associate, or a bagger, and he had worked for the company in the past. His latest employment began about a month ago. "We are saddened at the loss of our associate, and our condolences and prayers go out to his family at this time," Keane said. The crash is under investigation by police, Capt. Michael Botieri said. Blake's car hit the right side of the store, causing significant structural damage.
"He hit the florist department, and no one inside was injured," Keane said.
The car did not enter the building, but it did damage a brick wall and sheet wall inside. The store, on Samoset Street, opened at its usual 8 a.m. time.
