Listening carefully, you can hear the whine of the dynamic brakes from these two DC's (EMD-built G22AR) as they descend the 1 in 43 (2.3%) grade into Newmarket, on their way from Whangarei to Westfield at 0500hrs on the morning of December 17th, 2008, with train 129.
DCP 4830 is in the former Toll livery, and DC 4260 wearing the then new KiwiRail livery.
These are fairly compact units...
Very nice.

They are EMD locos, originally built at model G12A with high short hoods, but rebuilt with new cab and short hood, and upgraded engine, as model G22AR. See htt p://file046a.bebo. com/6/original/2008/12/18/12/4033440723a9662146761o.jpg for a pic of one.

The locos made quite a whine coming down the hill. Is that traction motors or dynamic braking?
