This would be Horner's final contribution to the franchise, and this score is very different when compared to Star Trek II. Where Star Trek II thrived on acting music that would never take it's foot off the gas pedal this score would have more of an underscoring approach. It's certainly a different take, but both scores are very well made however I still maintain that Star Trek II has the better score. The Vulcan theme that Horner created for Star Trek II would have a re-emergence here, and it would be expanded upon.

The obvious new theme brought into the score is the Klingon theme. I have mixed feelings on the theme created for the Klinongs. From one point of view it represents them well as barbaric creatures, and it displays there rough, and gruff personality. That being said the theme sounds like a total mess at times, and it doesn't quite have the sophistication that Goldsmith's theme had or the dark cunning edge that Eidelman's theme has. There is also a solo horn performance that seems to be playing at any given moment and lasting as long as the performer has enough breath. The theme has the metal clanging that Horner would go on to use in several of his scores down the line. You can either laugh at Horner's attempt to write a hard edged theme for the Klingons or you can accept it as a perfect way to write a theme for the Klingons presented in Star Trek III. It should be noted tough that the Klingons in Star Trek VI appear more cunning than the ones here in Star Trek III.

  • In my opinion, the Klingons were never as much fun as they were in ST:III. They were barely in ST:IV. They were confused in ST:V, and all noble and homiginized by ST:VI. But the most damage done to Klingons was TNG. That's where they were turned into boring, over analyzed allies. I need my Klingons mean because that's what Klingons are. Horner's music for Klingons as well as Goldsmiths Klingon theme in ST:TMP are both excellent and bring out that bad cool that made Klingons great.

  • i never noticed it before , but that is a pretty fucking awesome score

  • @howen77 Well, Star Trek Online gave them their balls back.

  • Basically, this was a "re-working" of the score for the movie "Wolfen" that Horner had done a few years earlier.

  • What we need is a Klingon villain, a young idealistic Klaa like warrior but with a total hatred of the Federation for 'softening' the Klingon Empire and he attempts to use both brute strength and evil cunning to try to destroy the alliance.

It has to have a big battle at the end with a federation starbase/ fleet attacked by the House Fleet of the young warrior and a big starship battle ensues.

Have the Klingon back to good old villany for a change but with his hatred of Starfleet.
