Recorded live at the Secret Policeman's Ball benefit concert for Amnesty International, Her Majestys Theatre, London, 30 June 1979.

The particular venom of the version, and the inclusion of the verse about Peter Wells, are due to Amnesty's refusal to support gay prisoners.

In other parts of the world, and even in the UK only 12 years earlier, people of Tom's sexuality were imprisoned.

Amnesty now actively supports the human rights of LGBT people.

  • @MsOtter13 My comment was a reply to a guy who sings along with "Glad to be gay" even though he's straight, just like i sang along with "Free Nelson Mandela" even though I'm white. We're both right to do that of course, because the songs are right.

  • @EarlOfSodom What,s colour got to do with freeing Nelson Mandela..i,m white but he is a great man..

  • @2030401 It's OK, I've sung along with "Free Nelson Mandela" even though I'm white.

  • @ThePropTarts Have things changed? Yes. Yes they have. You mightn't see it, but I have noticed when talking to older activists (I'm 18) that they can be much more negative than people my age. What's changed? Better acceptance, de-criminalization (in Ireland :D) and civil partnership. Are we there? Hell no, why would I be an activist if we were? But we're getting there. Don't let the idiots who remain wear you down.

  • i am sure glad to be gay

  • I remember this from seeing the film at the cinema when it was released. So much passion. This guy believes in what he is singing about.

  • I used to play this song really loud to the old bitch who used to live next door to us in Pittsburgh in the late 70s. When did I give up being an activist? Has anything really changed in the past 40 years?

  • This is way more important than the number of hits it has!
