The National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo, was inaugurated in 1959 based on the Matsukata collection left in France when World War II broke out and confiscated as enemy nation's assets by the French Government, which, however, gave it back to Japan after the war on the condition that Japan build a museum to house it . As its history is relatively short and the museum has not been heavily financed by the Japanese Government, it can't compare with great museums overseas. However, it can take pride in the collection of Claude Monet and Auguste Rodin in terms both of quantity and quality.
I filmed Rodin's works exhibited in the yard of the museum but once you step into the museum you will be surprised to find almost all the representative works by Rodin.
Incidentally, this museum, the only museum of this kind in Japan, was designed by the distinguished architect Le Corbusier, and thanks to his genius we have a wonderful,
innovative modern museum of art. Therefore,no wonder the people concerned have been trying hard to have it designated as a world heritage building.
