MESA, Ariz. Men, women and children stood by today at the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community as raw sewage, pesticides and fertilizers seeped and polluted a stream and lake. Fortunately for everyone it was a watershed demo by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District during an Earth Day celebration at the reservations Lehi Community Building.
Three Corps members from the Arizona and Nevada Area Office set up an Earth Day display at the event and educated kids and adults about how they can help protect the environment. They used cocoa along with red and green Kool Aid on a watershed model to simulate various pollutants that can run off into local streams and waterways.
