There is nothing that makes a great set of legs more fabulous than a sexy pair of heels. I love 'em -- Christian Louboutin -- Malano Blahniks -- Jimmy Choos but after a couple of hours standing in them, those shoes start to feel like a pair of gorgeous torture devices.

On Today's EXTRA Roadtest nurse Jamie shows you the secrets to keeping the spring in your sexy strut all day.

The pain you get in the ball of your foot from wearing heels is usually metatarsalgia -- the Latin meaning being "I paid way too much for these shoes to hurt so bad." Not really -- it's a medical term for pain and inflammation experienced at the ball of the foot -

The key reason for this problem is that when wearing heels your bodyweight is placed almost entirely on the forefoot, instead of the heel and arch of the foot, so the metatarsals (the 5 long bones in the forefoot) drop and the surrounding ligaments weakens and the forefoot structure collapses - leading to excess pressure and friction in the ball of the foot.
Podiatrists estimate that 80% of women that wear heels suffer from metatarsalgia.

There are many solutions for this --
Some women go as far as to inject filler into the ball of the foot which will cost you -- around $1,000 -

An easier more immediate solution is to put some insoles into your shoes -- this helps to prevents your foot from sliding forward and spreads the weight out - so your bodyweight is now distributed evenly over the entire foot instead of just causing excessive pressure and friction in the ball of the foot.
Check these out - Petals - Tip Toes -- these are great -- they are really cute -- like little flowers and they designed to fit in even the sexist little shoes, they are flower shaped cushions that stick - help prevent calluses from forming, protect bones and tissue, and cushion the sensitive ball-of-foot area. They range from $6.25 - $18.95
Dr. Scholl's ($4.00) -- these are great -- and at $4.00 you can try them out in all your less than comfortable shoes -- they don't really stick very well and they aren't as discreet as the Foot Petals, but they are a bit heartier for a firmer feel.
How To
You want to stick these right into the place inside your shoe where the most pressure occurs -- try to put them in a place under the ball of the foot where they feel like they are going to stay put. Foe me that is usually about here.
Solutions
Now if you are already suffering -- there are a few ways to get relief -- massage, and accupuncture are great because they increase circulation and getting oxygen-rich blood into the entire foot relaxes the aggravated nerves. You can also try a little ice and raising them up if they are swollen. -- RICE -- rest, ice, compression, elevation -- works for athletes -- works for fashionistas -- but if you can't get relief from these solutions you should make an appointment to see a podiatrist to prevent any permanent damage.
