David Pleasant speaks (at Sisters Uptown Bookstore, New York City) about the history of the drum in the Gullah/Geechee culture of African American residents of the Sea Islands off the coasts of Georgia & South Carolina. Calling these islanders the "drum folk," he describes how and why drums were forbidden as well as the percussive strategies developed by these people to use their bodies as drums: hands, feet, legs, etc.
