This Spider Walking Machine seen at the 2008 Burning Man weighs over 12,000 lbs The car has a large V8 engine with an automatic transmission. To make it go forward you simple hit the gas to bring the legs up and hit the brake as they come back towards the ground. In order to turn it, two hydraulic rams lower an arm which lifts the entire vehicle off the ground from its center of gravity; you then must manually pivot the vehicle and lower the spider back down again to move forward.

How do you steer?

@3xplex The V8 goes into an unlocked differential which powers the two sides via half-shafts that connect to the rotational mechanism of the legs at the middle. Each half-shaft has a brake on it connected to two brake handles.

So the driver simply hits the gas and if he wants to go right he pulls the right brake handle. This makes the left legs go faster and the right legs go slower, turning the vehicle.
