A mighty wall surrounds the medina, the old part of the Tunisian city of Sousse, whose fortifications date back to the 9th century. They were built by the Aghlabid Dynasty, who were strongly influenced by Islam. There is a remarkable gate at the northern edge of the medina. It is the entrance to the ribat, an impressive fortress that was built by the Aghlabids in the 10th century. This military building was very similar to a monastery in which Islamic interests dominated the actions of the Rabat's 'Warrior Monks'. The history of Sousse has been influenced by many different countries and cultures. Carthagian, Roman and even Byzantine influences can be found in the city. Its convenient location, coastline and fertile countryside created a prosperous trading and commercial centre, making Sousse the main metropolis of the Sahel. Stretching out onto the highest point of the medina is the impressive fortress, the kasbah, that was built on the foundations of a Byzantine castle and today, contains an important museum. Thanks to its special location, Sousse has always fascinated visitors with its rich variety of atmospheric, historical impressions. Thankfully, and despite its warlike past, the medina of Sousse has been able to preserve most of its original character.

    what does it mean? o.ô

  • some of the men there are respectless. i didnt show a lot of my body- really not! and some screamed: sexy titts.

i dont care about comments like that, but walking alone is sometimes stressfull. everyone wants to sell you something or go to drink something with you.

just say nothing and walk, walk, walk... it'll be okay.

i really love tunisia, much more than my homecountry....

  • I love Tunisiaaaaaa :-)

  • great video !

  • Me too I went around by myself, also as a women in the night on my way home I didn't feel scared. In Tunisia, no matter which town, I feel more safe than in Europe. There is not as much criminality than in Europe. If somebody doesn't like the practice of the bazars, there are shops with fixed prizes, nobody must by in the sooks. There are enough modern shopping centers in sousse too. Tunisia is my favorite country to make holiday! Mostly met friendly and kind people there.

  • Like the video, sorry your experience was a bad one, I went around by my self, no problems, didn't feel threatened either and that was mid season.

  • Myself and my wife very nearly got robbed in this little town of Sousse, , but if you do go to the town of Sousse make sure you are with a tour rep or more than ten to fifteen of you as you may get yourself into trouble:through no fault of your own they just want you to buy buy buy and also tip them for telling you the time, all the people i met here were scum, but you can't tar them all with the same brush as some were very nice as well.
