Game 1 saw the Oilers come out uncharacteristically as the more physical team. As what would be come the pattern for most of the series, the Oilers would score the game's first goal. The Flyers would tie it in the second period where it would remain 1--1 after 40 minutes of play. The "real" Oilers would show up however and put the game away with a three-goal burst early in the third period on scores by Glenn Anderson, Paul Coffey and Jari Kurri. Gretzky registered a goal and an assist in the onslaught as part of a 4--2 win. Although the Flyers outshot Edmonton 31--26. Edmonton would certainly have the better of the scoring chances in the game.

Please be sure to watch the rest of 1987 Finals highlight videos I have posted of you have not already. Please vote and comment on them all. It is my hope that one day this series will be released on DVD in its entirety. Maybe your comments and votes will help.

  • Tocket Bryan Propp Mellanby were goal scorers plus Ulf Samuelsson they had some talent other then there goaltender.

  • @jayhawk88z I don't think anyone would deny that they had some talent on the team but how does anyone they had compare to the likes Gretzky, Messier, Kurri, Coffey, or Anderson? ALL Hall of Famers now and the there is not one Flyer from that team in the NHL Hall of Fame…although an argument could be made for a couple of them. That's the point.

All one needs to do is watch these videos to see how outplayed and out matched they were.

BTW, It was Kjell Samuelsson on that team not Ulf.

  • Amazing upload. Love seeing these comprehensive game highlights. I've been trying to find examples of great Gretzky passes, they are hard to find on youtube. Your videos have alot of examples.

  • @lofemofe Thanks. Glad I could help in your search.

Although it is kind of hard to appreciate with the pixelated YouTube video quality, I think the best pass Gretzky made in this series was at 3:47 of this game 1 video. He takes a pass wrapped around the boards to him and with one motion of his skate hits Coffey on the tape who is all the way out in the slot between the face off circles. That is just unreal presence of mind and accuracy to make that kind of pass with his skate. He is the best.

  • Now why would you go and dub silly music over top of perfectly good highlights? Why not let the game speak for itself?

  • Technically, because it helps to evoke the mood and tell the story of what is happening in the game at the time. When was the last time you went to a hockey game and they played highlights in the arena without being accompanied by music? Never. When was the last time you went to see a movie and there was no music in it to help to accentuate the mood of what was going on? Never.

Why you ask? Because it is more entertaining and cinematic with the music and is MUCH less so without it.

  • I got this game still on vhs...great

  • @DaveTV2 You are welcome and Thank you for the invitation

  • I unfortunately did not tape every game of each other series that year. What I did post was a medley of the ESPN highlights of each series. Look in my videos, It is called "1987 Philadelphia Flyers' Road to the Finals"

That's the best I can do at the moment.
